Intel unveils Solid-State Drive Pro series for business PCs

It won’t be the sexiest news to emerge from the annual Intel Developer Forum this week in San Francisco, but the chip giant has announced its latest business-class solid state drives in a variety of form factors and capacities.

The Solid-State Drive Pro 1500 series will come in the traditional 2.5-inch size for workstation PCs, along with the ultra-slim M.2 form factor for use in Ultrabook laptops. Capacities include 80GB, 120GB, 180GB, 240GB, and 360GB in either size, though the 2.5-inch lineup also includes a 480GB model.

Intel promises maximum sequential read speeds of 540MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 490MB/s, with random input/output operations per second (IOPS) of up to 80K. The company also claims an annualized failure rate for the drives of under 1 percent, and advanced power saving to help battery life in Ultrabooks.

But more than the raw specs, Intel is emphasizing the features that matter to IT managers. These include enhanced security like Trusted Computing Group Opal protocols and hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption, and remote management via Intel’s vPro technology.
